Interestingly, as I was writing this column, I ran across an article in the Wall Street Journal on a recent survey looking at the effectiveness of older versus younger physicians serving as hospitalists, a subspecialty of internal medicine. While the younger physicians fared somewhat better in terms of decreased patient mortality (for a variety of potential reasons), an important survey finding was that the older physicians who fared best were those with a full patient load. It’s just one survey, but perhaps consideration of employing retired physicians would include those who retired in the past 18 months from a full-time position and are less than 70 years of age.

Autism
Haberkorn also serves as the family nurse practitioner at Judson Center Family Health, an integrated primary care clinic in Warren, Michigan. Judson Center Family Health (JCFH) provides family healthcare services, integrated with behavioral health to all ages and is a joint effort between  MedNetOne  and  non-profit, Judson Center. Judson Center is a multi-county human service agency that also provides autism programs, behavioral health services, child, and family services including foster care, adoption, and employment services for persons with disabilities.  MedNetOne provides clinical staffing and infrastructure for JCFH.  Haberkorn took the lead in March 2020 to introduce tele-health at JCFH to ease primary care access during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, she began Medication-Assisted Treatment and Substance Use Disorder Programs at Judson to treat substance use disorders as well as sustain recovery and prevent overdose.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Med Net One is actively engaged in developing and implementing care management strategies and multidisciplinary team care, with a special focus on providing whole person care to individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, depression, chronic pain, ADD/ADHD and asthma. Med Net One is the first physician-based organization in Michigan to actively pursue and contract with community agency organizations to provide access to a broad network of community care services.

Physicians could dedicate 10 to 20 remote hours a week in two to four five-hour increments to provide ‘intake’ on new patient care or augment an existing physician practice that can’t handle its patient load. Those with experience doing so could provide initial mental health assessments for patients who have scheduled appointments – or are trying to do so – specifically for a behavioral heath issue or substance use disorder.
