Epilepsy
Some patients with epilepsy may have an area of the brain that seizures consistently arise from. We refer to this often as a person’s seizure focus. If your Neurologist suspects your child may have a consistent focal area that seizures arise from it may be possible to remove this area and better control the patient’s seizures. If you or your Neurologist feels this is the case we will often schedule a visit in our office to meet your family and discuss surgical options with you. Since every child is unique so is their epilepsy, which is why we have a team approach to any potential surgery. Families and their Neurologist are involved every step of the way in the surgical planning process.

Ultrasound
Head Ultrasound: A head ultrasound uses sound waves to obtain images of the brain. Babies still have areas of the skull that have not completely closed referred to as the soft spot. Using the soft spot as a window to the brain an ultrasound machine sends out sound waves which can be recorded on a computer. The images can show our surgeons the fluid spaces and some basic anatomy of the brain. For babies it is a quick test with the only discomfort being a small amount of cold gel placed on the soft spot. A head ultrasound may not always provide the detailed anatomy required to make a surgical plan, but it is good tool to get a better understanding of the fluid spaces and follow changes that may occur.
MRI
If you are coming to visit one of our Neurosurgeons because you have been told you have a Chiari malformation on recent imaging it is helpful to bring that report and a disc of the imaging to your visit. During the visit our Neurosurgeons will discuss treatment options that are based on both symptoms and severity of the Chiari on the images. An MRI is the best exam to view a Chiari malformation; if an MRI has not been completed we will set it up during your appointment. It is possible we may want to repeat an MRI as some special tests we perform at Children’s Hospital of Michigan can be helpful to both monitor and diagnose a Chiari Malformation.
Radiology
Skull x-rays are the first screening tool if craniosynostosis is suspected. Much like an x-ray can identify a fracture in a bone elsewhere in your body, it is a good screening tool to identify if bones of the skull have prematurely fused. If you or your Pediatrician suspect craniosynostosis and x-rays have been completed please bring both the radiology report and the imaging on a disc to your appointment. If x-rays have not been completed you will first meet with one of Neurosurgeons and measurements of the child’s head will be performed. Next, the x-rays will be obtained. Children generally tolerate this very well since nothing touches them and caregivers can stay in the room with their child, wearing protective gear, while the x-rays are obtained. Following the x-rays our Neurosurgeons will review the pictures and discuss ideal treatment options.

Computed Tomography
Head computed tomography (often referred to as a head CT): This technology uses a thin x-ray beam that rotates around the head and provides detailed pictures of the brain and fluid spaces. There is a small amount of radiation associated with a head CT but at Children’s Hospital of Michigan our new CT scanner provides detailed pictures with very low dose radiation to help protect our young patients. A CT scan is minimally invasive as nothing touches the child and can be obtained in just a few minutes. Some age groups may find the equipment a bit intimidating.

Physical Therapy
Shortly after birth, Rainey LaPrade was diagnosed with Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by a birthmark on the face. Rainey wasn’t responding to non-surgical treatment and contiued to have seizures while undergoing medical treatment. Rainey was a great candidate for a surgery that the interim Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Michael Cools, said was developed at the Detroit hospital. The procedure Rainey underwent has proven to be less invasive, with less blood loss, fewer complications, and faster recovery. Since being discharged from the hospital, Rainey has been doing well and seeing progress through physical therapy.
