Oral Cancer Screening
The VELscope System®, recently approved by the FDA, was developed by the British Columbia Cancer Agency and Vancouver-based LED Dental Inc. It is a revolutionary hand-held device that provides dentists and hygienists with a new tool to aid in the early detection of oral cancer. The VELscope examination is a non-invasive, painless procedure which takes only a few minutes. The dentist shines a blue light into the mouth to cause it to fluoresce. This fluorescence helps the dentist visualize abnormal tissue which may be, or may lead to, oral cancer. Over 42,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer annually in the United States. With a mortality rate of over 50% at 5 years, one person every hour of every day dies of oral cancer in America. If detected early however, oral cancer is 90% survivable. Teeth Cleaning
Twice a year, you should schedule a routine dental cleaning. During this visit, one of our dental hygienists will remove plaque from your teeth, especially from places where your brush can't reach, such as underneath the gum line and between teeth. We will then clean your teeth and apply fluoride to help protect your teeth once you leave the office.
Fluoride Treatment
The interaction of bacteria in your mouth and the sugars consumed in your diet causes the bacteria to produce acids. These acids break down the minerals in teeth, forming a cavity (tooth decay). To avoid unnecessary decay will require strict adherence to a dental hygiene regimen: brushing and flossing twice a day, regular dental check-ups, diet control and fluoride treatment. Please ask us if you are brushing and flossing correctly at your next visit.
Dental Sealants
The back teeth (molars) have grooves where the chewing surface is, they are very difficult to clean and bacteria and food get trapped there. As the bacteria react with food, acid form and break down the tooth enamel, causing cavities. The sealants can protect these areas by sealing the grooves, preventing bacteria and food particles from accumulating.

Veneers
Composite bonding is used to improve the appearance of your teeth and enhance your smile. As the name indicates, composite material, either a plastic or resin, is bonded to an existing tooth. Unlike veneers or crowns, composite bonding removes little, if any, of the original tooth.
Crowns
Reinsert the tooth into the socket, (making sure you are holding it by the crown 'top') and hold it in place using a clean piece of gauze or cloth. If the tooth cannot be reinserted, carry it in a cup of milk and call us to come see us immediately.
Bridges
Fixed bridges are the most popular, and consist of a filler tooth attached to two crowns in order to hold the bridge in place. "Maryland" bridges, commonly used to replace missing front teeth, use tooth-colored metal bands bonded to surrounding teeth. And cantilever bridges use two crowned teeth positioned next to each other on the same side of the missing tooth.

Christal Allen-Roark is the mother of three wonderful boys, two of the sweetest grandchildren and a sheep doodle fur baby. She is one of the rare natives born and raised in Northern Virginia. Christal grew up in the Mount Vernon area and started her professional education at George Mason University and finished her degree at the University of Alaska. After graduating, she continued her education at Goodfellow Air-force Base in San Angelo, Texas. She then decided to do something a little different from most of her colleagues. Instead of starting her career in general dentistry, Christal thought it would be beneficial to commit to two years in each dental specialty (endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, and pedodontics) before working in general dentistry. During that time it allowed Christal to gain the experience to understand the knowledge in each facet of dentistry. This diverse background continues to allow Christal to think outside the box and is that aspect of her that makes her a valuable asset to our patients, dental team, and practice. She has worked closely with our team, sharing her experiences, to help in their professional growth since our practice doors opened in 2001. Christal recognizes that dentistry is a science and there are always ongoing advancements. For that reason she continues to attend many educational courses to be certain that our practice is always using the most proven advanced methods and technology in dentistry. At the same time, she remains dedicated to our patient’s safety and comfort. She is a professional who loves the personal relationships she develops with our patients.
