Dental Care
Dental Disease: The long-standing myth that feeding dry food will keep your cat’s teeth clean is overrated, inaccurate, and not supported by recent studies. For good oral health, we recommend daily tooth brushing and professional cleanings once or twice a year.
Vaccination
Preventative care is the best way to keep your cat healthy, and vaccinations are some of the most effective methods of preventative care.
Nutritional Counseling
All injectable vaccines carry some risk of side effects such as lethargy, loss of appetite, and soreness at the injection site; usually, these side effects are mild and temporary (no more than 24 hours). More serious side effects such as fibrosarcoma are rare; only 1-2 cases of this kind of malignant tumor are reported developing for every 10,000 vaccinated cats (AAFP Advisory Panel 1430). Still, we take the risk seriously and are committed to using only the safest vaccines available and offering alternatives to injectable vaccines whenever possible.

Pain Management
Yes. Every cat receives anesthesia and a pain-control injection prior to surgery for a pain-free procedure. The pain control injection provides relief up until the next day, for a full 24 hours. After any surgery there is some discomfort and inflammation. Additional pain relief tablets are recommended and available for purchase.

Parvovirus Infection Treatment
This vaccine covers three different, highly contagious diseases common in kittens. Rhinotracheitis (caused by feline herpes) and Calicivirus are airborne pathogens that cause upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharge, and watery eyes. Feline Panleukopenia is caused by a strain of parvovirus and can lead to high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and death particularly in kittens younger than 5 months old. We use an intranasal (nasal drop) vaccine. About 20% of cats will have some sneezing 4-7 days after vaccination. This form of the vaccine is safer and more effective than the injectable form. We give the vaccine to kittens every 3-4 weeks until they are over 16 weeks of age, then every 3 years thereafter. We have seen the disease develop in cats that are not vaccinated after a three year gap.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
FELV (Feline Leukemia Virus) vaccination is recommended for multi-cat households, outdoor cats, and kittens. A series of two vaccines are required initially (3-4 weeks apart) then yearly thereafter until middle age.

Kidney Disease: Cats being fed primarily dry food are chronically dehydrated. Chronic dehydration plays a large role in feline kidney failure.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
During every physical exam, our doctors check your cat’s teeth for tartar, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and any obvious signs of resorptive lesions (teeth that the body has begun to break down and reabsorb), and they will recommend a dental cleaning if they see plaque or gingivitis. Periodic dentals are an important part of overall wellness care: tartar and gingivitis allow disease-causing bacteria from the mouth into the rest of your cat’s body, and resorptive lesions are painful teeth that need to be removed.

Wound and Fracture Care
Feline AIDS is caused by Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). It is transmitted mainly through saliva in bite wounds, so it is typically seen in fighting and outdoor cats. There is no vaccine to protect your cat against Feline AIDS. Testing is important, because AIDS-positive cats should be kept indoors and receive more frequent veterinary check-ups and parasite testing. Many cats with FIV can still live fairly normal lives, although they will be more prone to infections

Dental Surgery
If oral surgery is needed, we will send home pain medication to keep your cat comfortable while healing. Any infection will be treated with antibiotics. We will discuss at-home care with you at the discharge appointment.
Veterinary Surgery
Modern anesthesia is very safe: less than 1% of cats die under anesthesia. Procedures such as spays, neuters, dental cleanings, and other routine surgeries pose very little risk to your cat. Additionally, we use the safest and most advanced anesthetic protocols available to further reduce the risks associated with anesthesia.

Spaying (female) or neutering (male) is one of the most important steps that can be taken to insure the health and happiness of your kitten. This surgical altering is usually done at 4-6 months of age.
Veterinary Euthanasia

Laboratory Services
Your cat will be admitted first thing the morning of the procedure. One of our doctors will give your cat an examination and perform pre-anesthetic blood tests. We will keep your cat under close observation during recovery and call you when the procedure is finished to schedule a discharge appointment (usually around 4-5 pm).
