- The Department of Mental Health (DMH), established in 2001, is governed by the District of Columbia. The department serves adults, children, youths and their families. It offers mental health services to adults through Community Services Agency in Washington. The department serves more than 12,000 people through DMH Community Services Agency annually. The Department of mental health also provides inpatient services at St. Elizabeths Hospital. The department offers individual, play, family and group therapies. It serves children with behavioral, emotional and academic problems. In addition, the department provides crisis assessment and intervention services to homeless people. The Department of Mental Health evaluates and treats individuals referred through criminal justice systems.
