It is very important that you continue to visit your family dentist once every six months, even during your orthodontic treatment, for teeth cleanings and routine dental checkups. Keep your retainer clean too by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also use denture cleaner twice a week. Do not use hot, boiling water or the dishwasher.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Every orthodontist starts out in dental school. Upon completion of dental school, some graduates immediately go into practice as dentists. Others choose to pursue a dental specialty, which requires additional schooling during a two- to three-year residency program. There are nine specialties sanctioned by the American Dental Association. Some you are likely familiar with are Pediatric Dentistry (dentistry for children), Periodontics (dentistry focusing on the gums), and Oral Surgery.
Jaw Surgery
Surgery is performed in the hospital with an oral surgeon, and can take several hours, depending on the amount and type of surgery needed. In lower jaw surgery, the jawbone behind the teeth is separated and the tooth-bearing portion is moved forward or backward, as needed. In upper jaw surgery, the jaw can be repositioned forward or backward, or the jaw can be raised, lowered and even widened. Certain movements may require the jaws to be separated, with bone added/removed to achieve the proper alignment and stability. Other facial bones that contribute to alignment may also be repositioned or augmented.
Tooth Extractions
The disadvantage of waiting for complete eruption of permanent teeth and having only one phase of treatment, for someone with severe discrepancy, is having to face the possibility of permanent tooth extraction or having a compromised result that may not be as stable.

Orthodontics
The Doctors: Dr. Iacobelli, founder and director of Orthodontic Specialists, graduated first in his class of 151 students from the University of Michigan Dental School in 1981. He was awarded numerous certificates for outstanding performance in dental anatomy and clinical children’s dentistry. He went on to complete his specialty residency and received his master’s degree in orthodontics from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1983. Over the past 35 years, Dr. Iacobelli has researched and developed uniquely efficient and precise holistic techniques for achieving rapid quality orthodontic results. He has become well known for developing these holistic concepts and has been asked to teach them to many practitioners not only at the University of Detroit Mercy and at the Michigan Dental Association Annual State Session, but also through his continuing education classes taught to all levels of dental professionals throughout the area and abroad.
Invisalign Orthodontics
In addition to utilizing a safer, low-radiation digital X-ray, Orthodontic Specialists utilizes “Itero,” a digital scanning system which eliminates the need for uncomfortable dental impressions by using 3D-scanning technology. This also allows for instantaneous sharing of more accurate 3D digital data with Align Technology (Invisalign®) and other orthodontic labs to more quickly fabricate better fitting appliances. All of your individual records are retained on a cloud-based server for easy access now or at any time in the future at any of our facilities. Online account access and payment capabilities as well as email and text message appointment reminders are some of our additional practice features.
Braces
Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position. This is a great time to wear braces! Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can choose brackets that are clear or metallic in color. You can choose the color of the ties that hold the wire in brackets. Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be, and the latest memory wire alloys move teeth faster with less discomfort to patients.
