I was charged $367.50 for replacing two electric hot water heating elements (plus thermostats but as best I can tell they come with the heating elements). Knowing absolutely nothing about hot water heaters, my assumption was that these elements must have been $100+, so when I found out that they are generally < $20, but I found as high as about $40, I was really mad. Even worse, since my father-in-law had already suggested replacing the elements myself, I asked the technician how difficult this repair is. He laughed and said, well the tool I need is $130. Well all the tool was, was a special socket wrench for unscrewing the element. I could have bought the tool (even though everyone else is telling the tool is more like $20) and the heating elements and done it myself and saved like $200. I called them after finding out they had ripped me off and was told this is the standard price and that they have insurance and workman's comp that causes the price to be so high.
