The Portage Police Department, governed by the City of Portage in Indiana, has been operational since 1959. It operates administration, patrol, community relations and dispatch divisions. The department works toward suppressing crime-related activities. The Portage Police Department also protects lives and properties of citizens. Its patrol division conducts preliminary investigations of reported crimes. The department also has a canine unit, as well as detective bureau that specializes in hostage negotiation and crime scene analysis. The Portage Police Department has a staff of more than 55 individuals. In addition, its records department is responsible for organizing and securing police records.
