Flooring
The scope of work included many unique elements and since Il Pizzaiolo serves authentic Italian cuisine, a Tuscan theme was developed. Stone and wood wainscoting was placed throughout the space on the walls and on the ceiling. Stone interior walls, authentic arches and trusses, wood tongue and groove ceilings, and tectum panels were also featured within the space. The bar and banquet ceilings featured tectum panel ceilings with distressed wood beams, hand-made by Burchick carpenters. Various high-end flooring products were installed in the bar, entry, and dining areas. A cloister ceiling was also installed within the entry.

Door Installation/Replacement
Drywalls
Burchick Construction self-performed all the sitework concrete, grading, and storm water management system, as well as all the concrete tilt-up panels, building concrete, interior drywall, metal studs and acoustical ceilings. The result was two Class A office buildings with a unique look, which are now the models for future office buildings in the Airside Business Park.

Burchick Construction Company Inc. is a full-service general contractor located in the North Hills of Pittsburgh, nine miles north of the center city on Interstate 279. Burchick’s management approach is designed to ensure optimum results for our clients, setting the performance standard for construction services.
Demolition
Another of the unusual challenges faced on the project involved coordinating utility shutdowns and initiating complex renovation work to the existing centralized MEP systems that serve the entire Carnegie Institute complex. This included the Carnegie Library, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Carnegie Music Hall. The final obstacle that Burchick Construction faced on this project involved doing heavy demolition work adjacent to the precious gems and mineral exhibit without disturbing or harming the exhibit. Burchick Construction successfully overcame each of these challenges.

Landscaping and Fencing

Landscaping
The building has a façade of terra cotta rainscreen, zinc flat-lock panels, zinc rainscreen panels, insulated metal foamwall panels, and composite aluminum panels, all of which Burchick self-performed. The structure is fireproofed steel founded on a combination of caissons and concrete grade beams, concrete footings, and concrete walls. The research labs have extensive casework, fume hoods, and other equipment. Sitework included significant decorative gabion walls, concrete sidewalks, walls, curbs, unit paving, landscaping, and other site amenities.
Excavation
The Owner contracted Burchick Construction Company, Inc. on a design-build basis to provide a two-story parking structure for 250 parking spaces. The structure was built over existing on grade parking. The structure was designed by VSL Structural Engineers. Burchick Construction self-performed the concrete and excavation. The project was performed under a Guaranteed Maximum Price delivery system with an overall savings provided to the Owner.
Retaining Walls

Siding
The building has a terra cotta rainscreen and metal siding façade, which Burchick Construction self-performed. Close coordination was required with the curtainwall and roofing contractors, as these were separate prime contracts. The structure is fireproofed steel erected through the existing Annex building, founded on micropiles and concrete pile caps. The project included two floors of laboratory space with extensive casework, fume hoods, and other equipment. Sitework included concrete sidewalks, walls and curbs, stone paving, unit paving, landscaping, and other site amenities.

Insulation
The work included a complete gut of the building interior from the 5 th floor up to and including the 11 the floor of the existing building. During the construction period, occupancy was maintained on Floors 1 through 4. The scope of work included asbestos abatement of materials such as floor tile, mastic, insulation, and various pieces of laboratory equipment.
Masonry
Exterior masonry restorations were performed on all elevations which included crack repairs, brick replacements, lintel and relief angle repairs and general repointing.
