Ants
A: These ants wander around the inside of the house looking for sweets especially in the early spring when the strengthening sun warms the colony from it's dormancy, yet the outdoor temperatures are still too cold for normal foraging. The presence of these ants indoors in the early spring is a pretty good indication that the colony is located within the structure since it is not possible for them to be coming in from the outdoors until much warmer weather. Worker carpenter ants in a single colony range in size from small (1/4 inch) up to large (1/2 inch). These ants are usually active on the floor as well as counters and shelves. They are normally seen in the kitchen near the plumbing areas (often inside the dishwasher), in any storage area where products containing sugar are kept and in bathrooms, also near the plumbing. If you see them in a non plumbing area and away from food sources then you can assume that the colony is nearby (i.e. near fireplace chimney, slider tracks, exterior door thresholds, along exterior walls adjacent to decks). During warmer days a number of winged ants may swarm inside and they are usually trapped near a window as they try to escape towards the sun. Seeing only one or two of these female reproductives or 'swarmers' indoors during those first hot days is not a cause for concern. It is likely that they emerged from a colony elsewhere and are searching for a new nesting site. By the way, when you see winged ants you can estimate that the nest is probably over three years old and may have more than 3,000 workers.
