Firstly, you should have your pets teeth examined by one of our experienced veterinarians on a regular basis and if necessary, follow up with a professional dental clean. Your pet needs to be anaesthetised to carry out a thorough dental examination, and to clean all teeth without distressing them. Once anaesthetised, a complete dental examination is carried out. This process involves charting all present teeth and evaluating their condition, including the degree of tartar, gingivitis (gum inflammation) and any pockets in the gums around the teeth.
Vaccination
Vaccination has revolutionised control of infectious disease in our dogs. It is essential that all dogs are adequately vaccinated to help protect the dog population as a whole.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
During the eye exam the veterinarian will look for evidence of cataracts, retinal bleeding, degeneration, inflammation, or detachment.
Behavioral Counseling
A well-behaved pet is what everyone wishes for. This adds so much fun and enjoyment to our lives, but at first it takes a little hard work and consistency from us, their human parents. With some great advice and obedience training this can be achieved! Statistically more than 80% of pets have some sort of behavioural issue, be it mild or severely debilitating. While most people are aware of it they may not know the best way to deal with the problem. Issues can range from...
Nutritional Counseling
Coccidiosis This disease is caused by a type of parasite that invades the intestinal lining and can cause ill health, weight loss and bloody diarrhoea
Comprehensive Examination
One of our experienced veterinarians will discuss your pets case and conduct a thorough physical examination to determine if your pet requires an ultrasound examination. An ultrasound scan is a very important tool to help us diagnose diseases in animals, particularly for conditions involving soft tissues, such as those found in the abdomen, or the heart. In some cases we refer to a specialised ultrasonographer to clarify and re-affirm our diagnosis.
Fleas will tend to jump onto your pet only to feed and then jump off again. Dogs and cats can have a reaction to flea saliva resulting in a skin condition called Flea Allergy Dermatitis or FAD. Treatment of FAD can be complicated and veterinary consultation is recommended.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect dogs of any age with young puppies being at highest risk.

We provide pain relief to every patient not to mention plenty of cuddles especially on recovery which absolutely always helps.
Vomiting Treatment
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Our veterinary team at Mt Helena Veterinary Hospital (MHVH) have a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to treating skin and ear diseases. The most common conditions we see are itchy skin, rashes, ear problems, skin lumps, nail problems, scooting (itchy bottom) and paw licking. We diagnose the underlying cause of these problems and put them into specific categories – allergies, infections (bacterial, yeast, fungal), mites, immune-mediated conditions, wounds, and cancer. Once diagnosed, we can then proceed with appropriate treatment options and implement long term strategies for control and prevention in the future.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
A common mistake in caring for budgerigar is to feed too much dry seed. Dry seed alone is very high in fat while being low in protein and many essential vitamins and minerals. A budgerigar kept entirely on dry seed can end up with multiple problems such as poor feathering, respiratory disease, fatty liver and diabetes. The best diet for a budgerigar includes pellets, fruit and vegetables and small amounts of seed as a treat.
Canine leptospirosis is a serious disease risk in some areas and can cause high death rates. It is spread by the urine of rats and is usually transmitted to dogs by contaminated food and water, or by rat bites.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
In the first 14 weeks of your puppy’s life we will vaccinate them against the following diseases – Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis and Canine Cough (kennel cough).
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
FeLV/FIV testing may be recommended for senior cats at an extra charge if deemed necessary. This tests for the feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses, which can suppress the cat’s immune system and lead to secondary infections, anemia, and even cancer.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
When there is a build up of bacteria, food particles and saliva on the teeth plaque is formed. Plaque sticks to the tooth surface above and below the gum line and if not removed will calcify into tartar (also known as calculus). This appears as a yellow-brown material on the teeth. Over time the bacterial infection in tartar causes irreversible changes to occur.

Thyroid Disease Treatment
Knee Problems Treatment
Heart Disease Treatment
Because dogs age so rapidly, major health changes can occur in a short period of time. The risk of cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, heart disease and other serious conditions all increase with age.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Blood chemistry tests measure levels of various substances in the blood and diagnose diseases such as diabetes, and liver and kidney failure.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease begins with a build up of bacteria in your pets mouth. Bacteria, combined with saliva and food debris, can cause plaque to accumulate on the tooth. As calcium salts are deposited, plaque turns to tartar (brown or yellow material starting near the gum line of the tooth). Without proper preventive or therapeutic care, plaque and tartar build-up leads to periodontal disease, which affects the tissues and structures supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can cause oral pain, tooth loss and even heart or kidney problems.
A very serious neurological condition in which the brain experiences a prolonged seizure, or a series of prolonged seizures without a full return to consciousness in between.
Soft tissue surgery encompasses any surgery that is not related to bones. It includes procedures such as desexing, exploratory laporotomies, caesareans, lump removals, biopsies, wound stitch-ups, removal of intestinal foreign bodies – the list is endless!
Small Animal Surgery
Our Veterinarians are experienced exclusively in small animal surgery and medicine and all our highly-skilled Nurses are registered with the Veterinary Surgeon’s Board. We make every effort to keep up to date with the best veterinary practice relevant to your pet’s needs.
Spaying and Neutering
In males the procedure is called ‘castration’ – we remove the testicles and the spermatic cord so that your cat cannot father any offspring. Castration also removes the risk of testicular cancer. The testicles are the main producer of the hormone testosterone, which can influence behaviour. By removing them, the level of testosterone in the blood is reduced, which should lower the chance of your pet straying and spraying.
Our animal hospital is equipped with an in-house laboratory that allows our veterinarians to quickly perform many of these diagnostic tests to achieve an accurate and rapid diagnosis. This is especially important in very ill animals and those requiring immediate or emergency treatment. Some more specialised tests may need to be performed by an external veterinary laboratory.

Microchipping
Some pet microchips implanted Australia wide between 2010 and 2013 have become faulty. Use our free service to check if there is a problem. You may be eligible for a free replacement if there is an issue. We can also check that your pet is correctly registered on the national database.
