Veterinary Ophthalmology
New foals are born without an active immune system, leaving them highly susceptible to infection. A new foal's protection from disease comes from his mother's first milk, known as colostrum. FHVP prefers to see the new foal within 8-12 hours of birth to check that immunity has been established as well as monitoring for any other congenital problems such as a cleft palate, entropion (rolled in eyelids), cataracts or hernias. The mare as well as the placenta will be checked to recognize and treat complications such as a retained portion of the placenta.
Comprehensive Examination
A pre-purchase examination is the most rigorous assessment that a healthy horse will undergo. It consists of a detailed examination of the body looking for any lumps, bumps and scars as well as a soundness exam. At FHVP we offer two levels of examinations from a more basic exam suitable for pleasure/trail ride horses to a more in-depth exam for show and competition horses. Hip Dysplasia Treatment
A lameness exam has three parts: localizing the lameness, determining the cause of lameness and finally treating it. The lameness is first localized by a combination of a physical examination including hoof testers, assessing the horse on the flat, on a lunge line or under saddle, flexion tests and local nerve blocks. Underlying cause is determined utilizing digital radiographs and ultrasound. Treatment obviously depends on the cause but can include confinement, oral or injectable joint supplements, physical therapy including a graduated exercise plan, joint injections, or stem cell therapy.

In the 1950's penicillin was a wonder drug, today any Tom, Dick or Harry can show up to the local feed store and pick some up, but do they know how to safely and effectively use it? Here's a hint, as an equine veterinarian seeing a fair amount of sick and/or injured horses, I probably only prescribe penicillin 2-4 x PER YEAR.
