Rest as much as possible, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Do not drive or carry anything over 10 pounds for a week. Realize that mood swings are normal, but if you are worried you have postpartum depression, talk to your doctor right away. Worry about taking care of yourself and your baby before you worry about weight loss.

She studied environmental biology at the University of Colorado – Boulder then received her MMS in Physician Assistant studies at Arcadia University. She has a passion for contraceptive management, general gynecology, and preventative care. Emily spent the last nine years in family practice and is excited to return to women’s health. It is a wonderful full circle story for Emily to be joining the practice that was with her from the very beginning!
Male Infertility
Male infertility may be due to low sperm count, sperm damage or varicocele, which is a malformation of a vein in the scrotum. Smoking, alcohol and drug use, obesity, untreated sexually transmitted infections, and certain medications or medical treatments may also contribute to sperm abnormalities.

Do you ever have trouble with bladder leakage or making it to the bathroom in time? If so, you may be suffering from urinary incontinence, a common medical condition which involves a loss of bladder control. It may happen when you laugh at a friend’s joke, or when you cough during a bad cold. You may also have an occasional urge to urinate that seems to come out of nowhere, but find yourself unable to reach the bathroom in time.

Gynecology
It is safe to travel in pregnancy assuming you do not have any complications. If traveling by car, wear your seatbelt, stay hydrated, and stop periodically to stretch and empty your bladder. In general you should try to avoid long distance travel after 34 weeks, but technically the American College of Obsetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) says is is safe to fly in the continental US until 36 weeks. Nothing about air travel puts a pregnant woman at risk of delivering early, but there are instances where women can go into labor at that gestation, and then they are away from home.

Endometriosis
Women’s fertility can be affected by many of the same risk factors as men, but they may also have problems within the ovaries or uterus such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids. Women who are underweight or those who are over the age of 35 may also experience difficulty conceiving. In both genders, there may be a singular reason for infertility or a combination of causes.
Pelvic Pain
A hysterectomy can be used to treat a number of problems or conditions. For example, a hysterectomy can be used to treat uterine fibroids, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain and adenomyosis. It can remedy uterine prolapse, cancer of the uterus and unusually heavy bleeding. Because of its invasive and non-reversible nature, however, a hysterectomy is typically only done when absolutely necessary. You will need to speak to your doctor about your options to find out if a hysterectomy is the best option or you.

Pros: A middle ground between a hospital and a home birth, birth centers take a natural, family centered approach to birth, while still offering low-tech medical interventions. Mothers have more freedom to give birth as they want than in a hospital setting. Pain relief options are often available. Certified nurse-midwives will typically care for the mother during birth. Childbirth is viewed as a normal, safe, and healthy process, but precautions are taken just in case. Many birth centers are now located inside hospitals, meaning that transfer to the hospital proper in case of an emergency would be faster.

Ovarian Cancer
Both male and female sterilization are minimally invasive surgical procedures that sever the channels through which reproductive cells travel. The recovery time is generally short and there are no long-term side effects. In fact, female sterilization (tubal ligation) may possibly reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.
Cervical Cancer
We recommend having a Pap Smear every three years starting at age 21 until 65, barring any pre-existing conditions or previous atypical results; these circumstances may warrant more frequent testing. Regular Pap screenings can reduce deaths from cervical cancer by as much as significantly, provided that patients with abnormal results follow their doctors’ recommendations for treatment.
Urinary Tract Infection
Common causes of urinary incontinence include pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. It can also be caused by a urinary tract infection, constipation or certain neurological disorders. Risk factors, such as gender, weight and other conditions, do not generally cause urinary incontinence, but they can make it worse.

Laboratory tests such as blood work and urinalysis can identify other problems, such as anemia or a kidney infection, of which the woman may have been unaware. Other tests may include pelvic examination, screenings for sexually transmitted infections, and a mental health assessment. And, be sure to ask us about Zika virus restrictions and other considerations prior to planning travel.

Ultrasound
A standard fertility evaluation will include a physical examination, as well as medical and sexual histories of both partners. For women, our doctors will first determine whether ovulation is occurring. This can be determined and monitored through blood tests that detect hormones, ultrasound exams of the ovaries, or an ovulation home test kit. If you have an irregular menstrual pattern, it could be a sign of an ovulation problem, but it is also possible for a woman with regular periods to have an ovulation disorder, as well.

When menopause occurs naturally, it happens as a result of the natural decline in reproductive hormones that occurs as women age. Menopause can also occur as the result of a hysterectomy, radiation or chemotherapy.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Brink (she/her/hers) was born and raised in Berlin, Germany. After completing a year of high school in Virginia as an exchange student, she returned to the US to study biology at Yale University. Drawn to the mountains, she then moved to Utah with her partner and attended the University of Utah School of Medicine for her MD. She completed her residency training at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago and is excited to be moving back to the mountains with her family, joining PIWH in 2022. Her clinical interests include all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology, with special focus on adolescents, contraception, and minimally invasive surgery. In her free time, Dr. Brink enjoys the outdoors with her partner and two young children. She loves canyoneering, backpacking trips, skiing and bells.
Vasectomy
Tubal ligation is a surgical method of sterilization for women. The fallopian tubes are blocked or severed to prevent fertilized eggs from traveling down the tubes into the uterus. While tubal ligation is typically performed laparoscopically, with tiny abdominal incisions rather than a large open surgical area, it is still considered major surgery, taking place in a hospital or similar setting with spinal anesthesia. Conversely, male sterilization (vasectomy) is a minor surgery that can be completed quickly with no hospital stay required.

Similarly, tanning beds are not safe, nor are they safe outside of pregnancy given the increased risk of skin cancer. Electric blankets and heating pads are safe for short periods of time.
