Founded in 1898, Detroit Day School for the Deaf offers general academic curriculum, modified to meet the needs of deaf/hard of hearing students in preschool through grade eight. Based in Detroit, Mich., the school utilizes both American Sign Language and oral instruction, providing programs to equip its students with self-advocacy skills. Mainstreaming its students with Edmonson K-8 School, it focuses on literacy, writing/communication skills as well as everyday functioning, including handling money, public transportation, homemaking and other practical life skills. Detroit Day School for the Deaf also provides parents and family members free sign language classes.
