Guy Routzon grew up in Michigan on a farm that he tended with his father, but as a young man with a family to feed, the Great Depression of the 1930s forced him to look for new work. With only a sixth-grade education, work was hard to find. He tried working in an auto assembly plant, but it didn't pan out. He headed west with his family and found a job in Colorado, painting barrack's rooftops at Lowry Air Force Base. When asked if he did floors, he replied, "You bet I can, " and in 1942 Guy's Floor Service was born. Within five years Guy was finishing twenty-one homes a day, thanks largely to a contract he landed with Burns Construction, which built thousands of homes to satisfy the housing demand of soldiers returning from World War II. At the height of the housing boom, Guy's Floor Service was the largest user of strip-oak flooring west of the Mississippi. Today the company is still one of the top family-owned businesses in Colorado. In 1971 Guy was ready to retire. He approached two of his sons, Ed and Joe, and asked if they would consider buying the company. In June of 1972 the torch was passed from the first generation to the second. Guy still came to visit and enjoyed watching his sons move the company into the future. As the second generation took over the helm, they brought new energy, ideas, and staff. In the early 1970s the third generation started working in the business. As with all things, Guy's Floor Service has had to change with the times. The company's early business was tied to new home construction; however, in the late '80s the company expanded its scope by opening a retail store in the Denver Tech Center. This location served the remodel customers as well as the new home buyers with a design center. Our new location also allowed us to get involved with small contractors and was staffed with in-house designers who provided free estimates and extended hours, including Saturdays. The company became actively involved with meeting the needs of the remodel customers. The company continued to grow, and in 1999 its three locations were consolidated into one facility in the newly redeveloped Stapleton Business Park, where we remain today. This new location serves the Denver metro area, northern Colorado, and western Colorado. In 2002 the company opened a location in Colorado Springs to serve southern Colorado. As the needs of homeowners have changed, the business of Guy's Floor Service has expanded to meet these new challenges. In 2004 Guy's Floor Service opened a stone fabrication division that fabricates and installs Granite & Marble countertops. Guy's Floor Service now has three divisions: New Home Construction, Remodel, and Commercial. These divisions allow us to serve a large customer base. Guy's Floor Service is a strong family-owned third-generation business and has taken the "You bet I can" motto of its founder, Guy Routzon, to a new level of "experience is our trademark." We have served Colorado since 1942 and look forward to helping you make your house a home.
