Roth IRA
Finally, starting this year, you can transfer the stranded funds to a Roth IRA. There are restrictions. One of the most severe is that the 529 plan must have been maintained for at least 15 years, and the amount transferred must come from contributions and earnings made at least five years before the transfer. The Roth IRA must have the same beneficiary as the the 529 plan, meaning that the money can’t go back to an account held by the parents, grandparents or other children. However, the owner of a 529 plan can change the beneficiary to another individual before the transfer....
Tax Deductions
Of course, the sunset will not be all bad. After 2025, the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions will go away, the limit on how much mortgage interest is deductible will go up from the first $750,000 in debt back to $1 million, and a bunch of miscellaneous itemized deductions, including investment/advisory fees, legal fees and unreimbursed employee expenses will be restored. People in lower income brackets will get back a personal exemption amount of (inflation-indexed) $4,700, phased out as taxable income goes up.
Income Tax
The proposal, codified in something called the Fair Tax Act that was introduced in the House of Representatives on January 10, would eliminate all income taxes, payroll taxes and corporate taxes, and incidentally also eliminate the Internal Revenue Service.
Capital Gains Taxes
One other note: Bitcoin holdings are taxed as if they are property, not as investments, under current IRS rules. The term ‘currency’ in cryptocurrency is a bit misleading in this regard; if the dollars in your purse or wallet gained in value, it would not be a taxable event when you spend them at the grocery store. But when you buy or sell Bitcoin, you are subject to ordinary income or capital gains taxes, just like stocks....
