Dr. South grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan with her three younger siblings. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan and earned her medical degree from American University of the Caribbean. She got to spend a year abroad in England before finishing her medical school training in Detroit. Dr. South completed her pediatric residency at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Most recently, she has been working as a traveling doctor in hospitals across the country. She is very excited to be settling back in Michigan near friends and family. Dr. South is board certified in pediatrics.

Each year about 200,000 children get hurt on playground equipment with injuries serious enough to need treatment in the emergency department. About 15 children die each year from playground injuries. While many of these injuries happen on home equipment, most occur at school and public playgrounds.

The AAP cautions parents not to have false security about a child’s safety in or near the water if they have had swimming lessons. Children ages 1-4 years old may be at a decreased risk of drowning if they have had some formal swimming lesions. This should not be seen as “drown proofing” a child of any age. There is no evidence that swimming lessons can prevent drowning in infants less than 1 year of age.
