Our special guest was Dr. David Haslam who’s a GP with a special interest in obesity and cardiometabolic disease, a Physician in Obesity Medicine at the Centre for Obesity Research at Luton & Dunstable Hospital. He’s also Chair of the National Obesity Forum (NOF) in the UK, Visiting Professor, Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, and Visiting Professor Chester University. Dr. Haslam was responsible for formulating the guidelines for adult obesity management in primary care and produced the first Primary Care guidelines for management of childhood obesity with the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health. The KBO focus this week was the role of private/public sector partnerships in fighting childhood obesity. David Dungan MD is a physician with DuPage Medical Group, a 325 physician multispecialty group in DuPage County, Illinois. He is board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics and has practiced in Lombard, Illinois since 1992. He has had a keen interest in children and adolescents with childhood obesity and overweight and was a champion of the DuPage Medical Group's nationally recognized clinical protocol for addressing this challenging problem.

Ratey, MD., who’s a celebrated pioneer in this field and the author of the award winning book entitled Spark. Dr. Ratey is an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Since 1998 Dr. Ratey has been selected each year as one of the best doctors in America by his peers. This KBO interview compliments the one previously done with Paul Zientarski of Naperville School District 203, and anyone interested in this cutting edge topic will enjoy this insightful interview with Dr. Ratey.

The KBO focus this week was the role of PREVENTION in fighting childhood obesity. James Winterstein became a Radiological technologist while serving in the US Army (1961-1964). After his discharge he attended National College of Chiropractic and received his DC degree in 1968, cum laude. He completed his Radiology residency at National College of Chiropractic and became Board Certified in June 1970. After a decade and a half in private practice Dr. Winterstein was installed as President of the college in 1986 which became known as the National University of Health Sciences during his tenure. Dr. Winterstein is a firm supporter a functional approach to childhood obesity prevention, and still includes pull ups and wind sprints in his own weekly workout routine. He provided KBO listeners with invaluable and practical insight.

Achilles Tendonitis
Basically, the foot has three jobs in the walking, running athlete. Shock absorption when the heel hits the ground, ground accommodation or shaping to the surface of the ground in stance, and pushing off or propulsion. Each of these actions demand particular motions of the foot itself and rotational motions of the lower and upper legs, pelvis and spine. The terms used to describe these foot motions are pronation and supination. These are complex motions taking place in the joints of the foot and lower ankle: three motions in three directions simultaneously. It is important to understand that pronation and supination ARE NORMAL MOTIONS. Problems can arise when the timing, velocity, or amounts of pronation or supination are off. Various inherited foot types and leg shapes are common problems for these motions. Examples are flat foot, high arches, bow legs, knock knees and one leg shorter than the other. All of these examples will cause abnormal pronation or supination factors. When these abnormal motions and positions of the foot occur, abuse, wear and tear, and overuse problems are seen. Conditions like arch and heel pain, shin splints, achilles tendonitis, and knee problems are a few examples. It is important to note that these foot imbalance problems are much more common than uncommon. National health statistics and surveys state that up to 75% of Americans exhibit some minor to major foot or leg mal-alignment syndromes. It is not surprising then, with such tremendous amounts of people running, doing aerobics, playing tennis, etc. that overuse type injuries have skyrocketed to epidemic proportions. Persistent reoccurring problems are often warning signs that these bio-mechanical (the science of the joints and muscles working together) factors should be examined.
