Dental Care
Dr. Stephen Galloway is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) with board-certification in the Equine Dentistry Specialty and is also an Equine Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry.
Vaccination
Puppies should be vaccinated by a veterinarian at 6, 9, 12, and 16 weeks of age to ensure proper protection. For good reason manufactures do not guarantee their products if it is bought over the counter or given by a lay person. There is poor quality control in vaccines bought at the store, and we frequently see dogs with parvo or distemper who were given vaccinations by the owner. Proper vaccination in a good investment in good health.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
There are several potential complications of DM in pets. Dogs are very prone to developing cataracts which may develop suddenly (i.e. overnight) and will cause blindness. In most cases however, cataract surgery can be done and vision restored. Cats may sometimes develop weakness in the rear limbs (diabetic neuropathy) which may or may not be reversed once the diabetes is regulated. Diabetic patients are also at a higher risk for developing infections due to a compromised immune system. Any infection can cause dysregulation of their diabetes. One of the common areas where we see infections is in the bladder so your veterinarian may need to culture your pet’s urine to ensure there are no bacteria present.
Nutritional Counseling
Obesity is the condition of being seriously overweight. Obese pets have more physical ailments and a shorter lifespan than those of normal weight. Obesity increases the risk of complications during surgery, and breathing and walking are more difficult for obese pets. Usually an obese pet stems from over eating and too little exercise. However, other factors such as breed, temperament, hormone imbalance, and disease, can cause obesity. Weight loss should be accomplished slowly, rather than with severe short-term food restriction. Your pet did not get that extra weight over night and can not loss it over night. The rule of thumb for checking ideal weight, you should be able to feel the dog’s ribs, but not see them. Anytime you are unsure consult with your veterinarian.

Regular brushing and routine examinations by your veterinarian will prevent the build up of plaque and gingivitis, as well as deter bad breath!

Did you know that fleas at ticks can infect your pet with diseases and intestinal worms? The best way to protect them is to apply a monthly flea and tick prevention product. It is simple and very effective! We do warn our clients against many over-the-counter medications, including these flea and tick serums: many lower cost brands are no longer effective! As parasites evolve, so does their resistance to older prevention drugs. Remember! Flea and tick prevention is species specific, meaning you can not use the same product for your cats and dogs.

Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Parvovirus (Parvo) is a viral disease that affects puppies most commonly. It causes life threatening vomiting and diarrhea. It can also attack the heart muscle. Without aggressive medical care involving IV fluids and antibiotics most puppies will die. About 80% of dogs survive with veterinary treatment.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Since there are so many reasons for your pet to have diarrhea (diet changes, parasites, stress, obstructions, bacterial infections, etc.) we recommend an exam and a fecal test before treatments or medications are recommended.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) literally means “sweet urine”. Diabetes occurs in pets due to a deficiency of, or resistance to, insulin in the body. Insulin enables the body to utilize glucose. Heart Disease Treatment
Just like people, every pet has special nutritional needs. Just as you wouldn’t want to feed your 3 month-old child a hamburger, an age appropriate diet will help improve your pets health and lifespan. A pet food formulated to meet the requirements of a growing kitten would not be appropriate for an older cats whose heart is stressed from congestive heart failure.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Similar to humans, pets are living longer. Our goal is to provide them the happiest and healthiest lives possible. Food for thought is that 2/3’s of health problems occur within the pet’s last 1/3 of life. The senior wellness program offers early detection of disease which allows proper intervention and treatment for your animal companion. Periodontal disease affects 85% of animals over four years of age and can lead to dental disease, tooth loss and dangerous bacteria infecting the pet’s kidney, liver and heart. Most pets need a professional cleaning and polishing once a year to avoid problems. We recommend the Senior Wellness Program yearly for our patients over seven years of age.

Veterinary Surgery
Another major medical risk to a female animal that can be avoided by spaying is a pyometra, or an infection of the uterus. Roughly 8% of intact female animals will have the unfortunate luck of experiencing this painful infection and emergency surgery. Dogs are more likely to develop a uterine infection than other species, simply because of the way their cycle works, and many times the infection turns life threatening by the time it is discovered by a veterinarian.
Spaying and Neutering
Neutering your pet is one of the best things you can do for him/her. Intact female dogs and cats can suffer from infections of the reproductive system as they get older, while male dogs and cats can suffer from prostate problems. Cancers of the reproductive system are difficult to detect and spread quickly, and the risk to the intact dog or cat of developing such cancers increases with age. Neutered pets live longer healthier lives.

With an in-house laboratory we are able to perform many diagnostic tests quickly and efficiently. We are also proud to have the ability to offer not only some simple tests but also some more complex tests, too!
X-Ray
A chest x-ray determines the severity of infection, and tells us which course of treatment is needed. Your dog is then hospitalized to receive treatment. After 4 months a blood test is given, and if negative your dog is assumed to be free of heartworms. Previously infected dogs are put on protection to prevent additional infection.
