Glaucoma
Glaucoma Glaucoma is usually a very progressive and slow acting eye disease. Like diabetic eye disease it is important to stay in annual contact with your ophthalmologist as most symptoms do not become noticeable until it is too late. Glaucoma results from increased pressure in the eyes usually caused by either too much production of the fluid within the eye or a problem in releasing fluid from the eye. Gradual vision loss can occur starting in the periphery of the visual field and working its way inward toward the center of your field of view. Many drops and some surgical procedures have proven highly successful in the treatment and management of glaucoma. Dr. Conrad will be able to assess your risk factors and help determine the right approach for each individual.
Ophthalmology
Upon completion he started Conrad Eye Centers to provide surgical, medical, and routine eye care to the Louisville area. Dr. Conrad is double board certified through the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Kentucky Medical Association and the Indiana State Medical Association.
Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration Macular degeneration is a condition in which the integrity of the nerve layer in the macula (part of the eye responsible for focusing fine details in your central vision) is gradually lost. Unlike glaucoma macular degeneration starts affecting vision in the central field of view and works outward. Studies have shown certain vitamins and other naturally occurring nutrients can help stave off the effects of the disease. Macular degeneration has been linked to heredity, so Dr. Conrad will discuss your personal risk factors and medical history before starting any treatment.
Laser Eye Surgery
Since 1995 Conrad Eye Centers has been committed to providing comprehensive personalized care to the Louisville and Southern Indiana area. Dr. Conrad opened the doors to the first Conrad Eye Centers office in Corydon, Indiana in October of 1995. In 1996 he opened another office in New Albany, Indiana at the Professional Arts Building on State Street. After two successful years in Indiana he closed the Corydon office and opened an office in a cozy building conveniently located in the heart of St. Matthews. Since 1998 Dr. Conrad has provided exceptional care to his patients at both the New Albany and St. Matthews locations. 1998 was also a big year for Conrad Eye Centers as Dr. Conrad became one of the 13 original founding physicians of the Suburban Excimer Laser Center purchasing the first VISX laser in Louisville and later offering the first blade-free LASIK procedures in the city.
Cataracts
I had been having trouble with my eyesight for some time especially the right eye which was extremely blurred. One Sunday I awoke to find myself unable to distinguish objects. I called Dr. Conrad and he met me at his office on a Sunday morning as he was going to a basketball game. I had a monster cataract in my right eye and one growing in my left. During an extremely busy period, he found time to fit me in for surgery on my right eye and then my left eye two weeks later. I am very pleased to say I now have 20/20 vision in both eyes and that the surgery and recovery were both fast and painless.
Cataract Surgery
Conrad Eye Centers uses the most advanced multi-focal lens implant technology in intraocular lens replacement for cataracts. As we age, the eye’s central focusing structure, the lens, becomes cloudy or hazy due to the natural breakdown of the crystalline structures that compose it. This condition is known as a cataract and causes blurry or hazy vision. Cataracts that impair the vision must be removed surgically. In this procedure, Dr. Conrad will replace the natural lens with an artificial lens implant which can be either monofocal or multifocal. Monofocal implants have been in widespread use since the 70’s and are safe and effective. However, monofocal implants allow good vision at only one distance; so glasses are needed to see well at other distances. Multifocal implants, on the other hand, can focus at both near and far, greatly reducing the need for glasses after cataract surgery. Dr. Conrad is a certified surgeon for the ReStor and Crystallens multifocal lenses. Most patients get better vision than they have ever experienced, and many do not need glasses. In 1987 Dr. Conrad matriculated at Duke University School of Medicine, one of the nation’s top medical schools. Dr. Conrad excelled at Duke, receiving many honors and doing original collaborative research on corneal neovascularization (abnormal blood vessel growth in the front part of the eye) which yielded a new system for measuring blood vessel growth. In 1991 he was named a Scholar in Pathology and attained his M.D. degree. After Duke, Dr. Conrad trained in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and returned to Louisville to complete his residency in Ophthalmology at the Kentucky Lions Eye Research Center at the University of Louisville.
